La Xtabay for Querido México

Nórdica Libros published Querido México (Dear Mexico), a book supportive of the earthquake victims of September 19th 2017 that devastated this country. It has texts written by Pilar Adón, Espido Freire, Marcos Giralt, Jesus Marchamalo, Sergio del Molino, Rosa Montero, Carlos Pardo, Javier Rodríguez Marcos, Care Santos and Marta Sanz, and illustrations by Elisa Arguilé, Pep Carrió, Meritxell Duran, Elena Ferrándiz, Isidro Ferrer, Julián Herrera, Antonia Santolaya, Antonio Santos, Mo Gutiérrez Serna, Emilio Urberuaga and myself.

The images go with the texts but don’t illustrate them. They are personal tributes to a country that we love. My image recreates the Xtabay, the protagonist of one of the most beautiful stories from the Mexican folklore that reclaims the role of the “loose woman” and puts “the virtuous woman” in her place.
